An overview of the process for designing the layout for Maker Faire Orlando
Edit me

Over the years we’ve tried a number of different tactics for placing Maker exhibits. There may not be a perfect layout, but here’s some things we’ve learned.

  • Create Zones - as much as we like the idea of mixing up all the things, we’ve found that Makers and Attendees appreciate having like content in zones.

  • Place the big things first (like a 32’x16’ Combat Robot arena or a stage) then work to create pods and pathways throughout the space.

  • Spread out the Hands-on Exhibits - they create lines, and they can help draw people into the corners of the space when they are seeking the activity

  • Dark Zone - we like it, some makers like it, but you’ll get some complaints. The best thing is to fill it with bright interactive things that create their own light, and with makers who appreciate the low lighting.

  • For each exhibit, review the Call For Makers fields to determine their needs:

    • Power
    • Water
    • Noise Level
    • Inside / Outside - You may need to negotiate with some makers who say “inside only” if you don’t have enough interior space for all the requests
    • Other related makers - If makers ask to be placed near another group, try to make it happen. Often they are supporting each other and supported makers are happy makers.
